Finance Friday: What do I need to bring when applying for a loan?

What information do I need to bring with me when applying for an Auto Loan?

Dartmouth Motors Finance Manager, Chris Havey, answers a first time car buyer.

If you have good credit or established credit you often don't have to bring additional information with you when applying for an auto loan.

If you have a weaker credit score or haven't yet established credit for yourself there are some extra documents that may help when it comes to the financing process.

Of course you'll need to fill out personal information like social security number, phone number, and your address when applying for a loan. So please be sure to remember your drivers license.

You may also be asked about any credit cards in your name, checking accounts, income earned by you or anyone who is cosigning, and any major events in your financial history .

Other documents that may be useful when getting approved for financing an auto loan include:
Proof of Residence: Something like a Utility Bill that shows where you live.
Proof of Income: Pay Stub, W2 or 3 Months of Bank Statements.

Being prepared when you come in to purchase a vehicle is a great way to avoid delays in bringing home your new car, truck or SUV.

Another great way to prepare yourself before purchasing a vehicle is to check your credit score.

You want to be sure all of your credit information is accurate and complete. This is also helpful because you may see something that isn't right on your report and be able to fix it before coming in for financing.

Finance Friday: What does it mean to co sign a car loan?

If someone asks you to co sign or you are thinking about asking someone to co sign a car loan there are risks and rewards in the process for both parties.

Chris Havey, Finance Manager at Dartmouth Motors, takes time this week to answer a question from a parent who is considering co signing for her daughter.

Many times when someone is asked to have a co signer on a car loan it is because the person looking to purchase the vehicle has not yet established credit.

Other cases where someone may require a co signer include having an income level that the bank considers to be at risk of default or having a bad credit score.

In short, the reason for having a co signer is to have a person who is willing to claim responsibility in case the person they co sign for stops making payments.

Being a co signer shows up on your credit report as joint credit so it does build credit for both parties.

Co signing a car loan can be a great way to help trusted family, especially students, start to build credit.
